BeatleJazz – All You Need – LightYear Entertainment LTY 54796, 66:00 ****:

(Toots Thielmanns, harmonica; Joe Lovano, sax; Richard Bona, bass & vocals; David Kikoski, piano, Fender Rhodes & synth; Brian Melvin, drums & tabla; Larry Grenadier, bass)

I believe this is the fourth in a series of BeatlesJazz CDs, all with the same producers but featuring different artists  – sometimes even alternating on different tracks of the same CD.  The third album of inventive jazz arrangements of classic Beatles tunes featured Michael and Randy Brecker respectively on sax and trumpet, and John Scofield and Mike Stern on guitars. This volume is distinguished by such as harmonica virtuoso Thielmanns and saxist Lovano. Vocalist Bona overdubs his voice in one of the African languages for his version of All You Need Is Love – reminding one of the sound of Ladysmith Black Mombazo.

The repertory is all great – can’t lose with the Beatles. There were two John Lennon songs I didn’t know. Melvin and Kikoski – also the producers of the series – are heard on all the tracks and the various other performers step in and out from track to track.

TrackList: Fool on the Hill, Lady Madonna, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, All You Need is Love, All Things Must Pass, The Night Before, Beautiful Boy, Look at Me, I Want You (She’s So Heavy), Cold Turkey, Waterfalls.
