Beta Söderberg & Justango – Bailata – World Village WV 498022 ***** [Dist. by Harmonia mundi]:

(Beata Söderberg, cello and all compositions; Cristian Zarate, piano and director; Horacio Romo, bandoneon; Robert Tormo, doublebass; José Luis Colzani, percussion; guest guitarist – César Angeleri)

Swedish cellist Söderberg was studying for her Masters at the Manhattan School of Music when she happened to walk into a tango club on a whim.  She was so impressed by the intense music that she began to frequent the clubs and started to compose her own tango music in the “new tango” style originated by Astor Piazzolla. Her first album, recorded in Buenos Aires, was nominated in 2005 for Best Album/Best Artist of Tango Nuevo. This CD is her first with World Village, and was also recorded last year in Buenos Aires.

Any Piazzolla fan will love this album.  It’s sort of a feminine view of the New Tango – not quite as intense occasionally as Piazzolla, but highly individual and not just copying his sound.  In spite of there being only a single bandoneon, the rhythmic pulse is very strong in most of the numbers.  Like Piazzolla’s music (at least according to a tango instructor I once had), it’s extremely difficult to dance to – the old-fashioned tangos working better for beginners (but sounding corny to my ears).
