2008 Mt. Hood Jazz Band + Combos – Doin’ The Best Deeds – Sea Breeze Vista SBV-4583 ****:

Hey, these kids are terrific! On first listen one wouldn’t know these aren’t seasoned performers who have paid their dues. There’s no specific credit for the faculty member of the college who’s responsible for this, but it does credit Susie Jones as the producer, so perhaps it is she. Congratulations, I say!

Top vocalist Nancy King leads things off with Where or When, and even when a student vocalist takes the next one – What Is Hip? - the results don’t flag. The band really gets behind the standards such as Cherokee and Georgia, but the lesser-known tracks shine as well – including one great Thad Jones arrangement and another from Duke Pearson. Sonics are above par as well.  This band has certainly done its best deeds on the CD.

TrackList: Where or When, Road to Uncertainty, Jeanine, Chips and Salsa, Cherokee, My Foolish Heart, Pedalogy, 2nd Race, What is Hip?, Georgia, Forget Regret.
