Alex Hargreaves, violin – Prelude – Adventure Music AMA1056 2, 45:33 *****:
Alex Hargreaves is one of those musicians that leave you shaking your head in wonder and this is for a lot of reasons. One: the level of his playing technique—stunning! Two: the depth of his musical expression—moving. And Three: the age of the performer—uh, pretty young. “Prelude” is Hargreaves’ first headlining venture and it is quite the amazing debut.
Hargeaves can also be heard in the recording “Mike Marshall’s Big Trio,” along with Paul Kowert. In this solo CD, “Prelude,” Hargreaves (violin) is joined by Mike Marshall (mandolin), Paul Kowert (bass), and Grant Gordy (guitar). Showing up for the fun are also renowned banjo virtuosi Béla Fleck and Noam Pikelny.
Some of the tracks are covers of tunes by people like Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, and Stevie Wonder. The majority of the tracks are written by Hargreaves. All are performed with effortless grace and consummate taste. Even as a teenager, Hargreaves is a force to be reckoned with and as he matures as a musician, there’s no way to predict how high he’ll climb. For fans of contemporary acoustic and improvisational music, this is highly recommended.
