Gerry Mulligan Sextet – Live at Liederhalle Stuttgart 11/22/77 – Jazz Haus SWR Music101 700, 68:32 [Distr. by Naxos] *****:
(Gerry Mulligan, bari sax/ Dave Samuels, vibes/ Thomas Fay, p./ Mike Santiago, guitar/ George Duvivier, bass/ Bobby Rosengarden, drums)
This third release adds to the growing jazz gems in the series of Jazz Haus recordings originally made by German radio stations and now carefully remastered for CD release—many of them in excellent stereo, such as this one.  The cool sound of Mulligan’s baritone sax is heard in all its beauty on these nine tracks (he didn’t like to call it West Coast Jazz). He was age 50 during this stint in Germany, and although he sometimes looked back on a great career, he also delved into fairly contemporary sounds, such as on the track “For an Unfinished Woman.” This is a most dynamic live recording that preserves the excitement of the original place and time. [You can also sample some videos shot at the same time here on YouTube.]
