Logitech Introduces TV Camera for Skype – The new LogitechTV Cam HD features built-in Skype capability, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity and a remote controller.Users can place and accept video or audio calls from those using any Skype platform, including smartphones, tablets, HDTVs and computers. Calls can also be placed thru a Skype account to conventional phones using Skype Credit or a calling subscription plan. The camera system uses a wide angle lens developed in conjunction with Carl Zeiss Company and is said to enable clear sound and images, even in low light. It also has a built-in ringer, dedicated power supply so that calls may be received even with the TV off, and four mics to help reduce noise and echoes for beetter audio quality. SRP will be $200.
DEG Announces New Officers – Home entertainment industry promotional entity the Digital Entertainment Group has elected a new slate of members for their steering committee. It includes Bill Sondheim of Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment, John Taylor of LG Electronics, Mike Lucas of Sony Electronics and Michael Pauli of Sony Music Entertainment. The group’s chief financial officer is Steve Beeks of Lionsgate. DEG’s plans are to continue efforts supporting home entertainment products: including Blu-ray, UltraViolet, connected devices, and digital delivery.
Sharp Electronics Has Wider Loss, Cutting 5K Jobs – Sharp had a net loss of $1.8 billion in its first quarter and plans to lay off 5000 employees by March 2013. It will reorganize its business groups, review operations at its two plants, and streamline its headquarters in attempts to cut costs and return to profitability. In its health and environmental equipment section, sales were up 5.1% due to higher sales of air conditioners and washing machines.
Google Licenses Rovi Guide Tech – Interactive program guide developer Rovi has reached a multiyear patent licensing agreement with Google for IPG technology in set-top boxes and online and mobile platforms. It will involve not only traditional platforms but also new media experiences across multiple screens.
Smart TVs’ Increasing Popularity – Consumers are becoming more interested in getting delivery of their movies via their Internet-enable smart TV, and are switching to the extra functionality that the new IPTV models can deliver. The number of homes with smart TVs has doubled in many areas in the past year. Many people have wireless networks in their homes already, and about a third of those purchasing a new TV are hooking them up to the Internet.
