“Antonio Lysy at the Broad” Music from Argentina – GINASTERA: Pampeana No. 2; Triste; SCHIFRIN: Pampas; PIAZZOLLA: Le Grand Tango; Oblivion – Antonio Lysy, cello/Bryan Pezzone, piano/ Pablo Motta, bass/ The Capitol Ens. – Yarlung Records 180gr audiophile vinyl 95968-517V [Distr. by Naxos] *****:
This interesting disc showcases the cello of Antonio Lysy and the five selections show the impact of both pre-Hispanic Amerindian traditions and Spanish Creole influences, as well a modern influences such as the Argentine tango. The excellent liner notes on the album are by the cellist, with some details on each of the works and their background.
The two Ginastera works come from that patriarch of Argentine music, who mentored many composers to turn folk melodies into concert music. Hollywood composer Lalo Schifrin is of Argentine extraction, and he arranged the slow movement of his Guitar Concerto for cello and piano for Lysy. The cellist’s friend José Bragato arranged Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango for cello and string ensemble. He also arranged the closing work on the disc, the gorgeous Piazzolla tango Oblivion.
Yarlung Records has very high standards in both their gold CDs and vinyl releases. CEO Bob Attiyeh recorded this album in Santa Monica in 2009, using AKG C-24 tube stereo mics and Agfa 468 analog tape, tube preamps and no mixer. Analog tape technician Len Horowitz was on hand and Doug Sax was involved in the mastering. The solo cello and string tone behind it are rich and natural-sounding. The disc surfaces are free of any noise. This album won a Latin GRAMMY award and deserves it.
