Classical News – The New York Philharmonic has lost its VP of Communications, Eric Latzky; the orchestra has made no announcement as to his successor.  Universal Music has dissolved its Classical & Jazz Division, due to its recent purchase by EMI. Deutsche Grammophon will take over the classical department and EMI labels Verve and Blue Note will absorb jazz. The new Universal Music President in Europe called former managing director Christian Kellersmann an innovator who “decisively contributed to the importance of classics and jazz on the German market as well as within Universal Music Group.”  The Lyric Opera of Chicago has a new chorus master, Michael Black, who starts in August 2013. SF Opera Chorus Director Ian Robertson has been serving as guest director.  In April 1972 2800 listeners at Carnegie Hall cheered a great performance of Elliott Carter’s Variations for Orchestra by the Chicago Symphony and Georg Solti. Last week the same work was performed by the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel at Lincoln Center, and it had a most tepid response.
Barco Acquires Stake in Projectiondesign – Belgian video display maker Barco has acquired a 61% stake in the Norwegian projectiondesign, to take a greater position in the mid-size projection market. Barco is largely focused on the digital cinema business, and the combination strengthens its leadership in high-performance projection technology. Barco represents world class competencies in 3-chip DLP while Projectiondesign is renowned for its 1-chip DLP projectors. Projectiondesign is positioned in the Northern European market whereas Barco has sales coverage in Asia, the Americas and Europe.
Escort Dongle Accesses Free Mobile-DTV on Apple Devices – Escort, producer of radar and laser detectors, now offers a dongle that turns recent iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches into TV screens to view free mobile-DTV broadcasts transmitted by local stations under the Dyle Mobile TV brand. The service is also found in the company’s Escort MobileTV receiver and is sold as a computer accessory by Elgato. The dongle plugs into 30-pin ports on the iDevices and delivers live entertainment, sports and news from select TV around the country. Users can pause the telecasts for up to ten minutes.
