Music Radio App Just for Jazz – JazzBirdî is being launched today by JazzBoston as the new international jazz radio app, available in both free and paid versions. It is the only music radio app devoted exclusively to jazz, and provides up-to-the-minute schedules from a carefully-curated collection of shows streaming live from stations around the globe. The paid version ($2.99) has features for multi-taskers who want to listen to jazz while they text, email, surf the web or play games. It has a sleep timer for listening in bed and a switch to turn off ads. The free version is Here. JazzBoston was organized last summer as a result of the public dismay at the near total withdrawal of WGBH from jazz programming, and it continues as a volunteer staff encourage music radio stations to increase jazz programming.

Samsung’s 85-inch 4K TV Now Available – Only 77 of Samsung’s 85-inch UHD TVs were available for pre-order, because it has a price around $38,000 U.S.  UHD means 4K, which is four times the pixels of current Full HD TVs and twice the resolution. There is so far little such content available but offering upscaling from 2K to 4K has become a big attraction (though it is probably as successful as upscaling, upsampling, or converting 2D to 3D—which means not much). LG and Sony have 84-inch UHD sets at about $20,000 and $28,000 respectively.

Gibson Buys Majority Stake in Teac – Last year Gibson Guitars bought 51% of Onkyo USA and is now buying a majority stake in Japan’s Teac to share technology, marketing ideas and to reduce expenses. Gibson offers pro audio equipment and musical instruments. Teac includes both pro and consumer audio, broadcast equipment, medical equipment, in-flight entertainment systems and recordable optical discs. The three companies have an opportunity to work together to reduce costs.

Definitive Recalls Some Subs Due to Shock Hazard – Definitive Technology is voluntarily recalling SuperCube2000 powered subwoofers made in September 2012 due to a potential shock hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced. About 900 units manufactured that month are covered in the recall.
