Jason Anick – Tipping Point [TrackList follows] – Magic Fiddle Music MFM-2 [2/18/14] ****:

(Jason Anick, violin & mandolin; Jason Yeager, piano; Clay Lyons, alto sax; Matt DeChamplain, piano; Lee Dynes, elec. guitar; Kris Jensen, tenor sax; others)

Anick is a terrific jazz soloist and composer on both violin and mandolin. Five of the 11 tracks here are his own compositions. There’s some great jazz classics from Horace Silver, Hank Mobley and Ornette Coleman, as well as a great gypsy jazz take on Django’s “Minor Blues.”

His CD has superlative quotes on the back from such as Christian Howes and Regina Carter and after hearing this you’ll agree with them.

TrackList:

Stomped Out, Inspiration Point, Mary Andra, Minor Blues, Peace, Occupy, This One’s for You, My one and Only Love, This I Dig of You, Turn Around, The Night Has a Thousand Eyes

—John Henry
