DTS Launches DTS:X – DTS, who in 1993 had revolutionized cinema sound with the soundtrack for Jurassic Park, has returned to cinema with their state-of-the-art object-based audio environment DTS:X. It replicates a real-world sound enivironment, transporting the audience into a new dimension of sound immersion by delivering captivating entertainment experiences in the cinema and at home. Rather than being tied to prescribed speaker configurations or to a certain number of audio channels, DTS:X allows a flexible speaker configuration that best fits the viewing space. The idea is to scale immersive soundtracks across a wide range of playback systems – from efficient to extravagant – while staying true to the content creator’s vision.

MDA is the DTS license fee-free contribution to the pro audio community for mixing and storage of immersive audio content. Sound engineers only have to mix once for both immersive and conventional cinemas, allowing content to be distributed beyond the theater for streaming, broadcast, optical media and more. Nearly 90% of the home AVR and surround processor market will launch DTS:X-enabled products or updates by this summer. Some of the key features for home theater include: Backward Compatibility, Dialog Control (the center channel vocal or narration may be turned up or down without affecting the other channels, for example), Flexible Speaker Layout, and Lossless master audio quality of 96K for object mixes and 192K for stereo and multichannel mixes. DTS Headphone:X is also provided at headphone jacks and using an ordinary stereo headphone users can experience fully immersive surround sound.

Classical News – The Toronto Symphony fired Valentina Lisitsa from her concerts with them this month due to the anti-Ukrainian missives she has been Tweeting, many bordering on hate speech. Katy Clark will be the new head of the Brooklyn Academy of Music starting in July. She was CEO of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The Academy has just moved into the $50 million DiMenna Center on the Lower West Side of Manhattan.  Houston Symphony Concertmaster Frank Huang will be the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic next season. He replaces Glenn Dicterow. The Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä, has married his concertmaster Erin Keefe on Easter Sunday. She had been a serious candidate to succeed Glenn Dicterow but withdrew her name after the engagement.

HDR Coming to Amazon Prime Video Streaming – Sometime this year Amazon will bring High Dynamic Range video to its Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming service. This will be a first for HDR quality. It will deliver greater contrast with detailed shadows and distinct highlites to make colors appear richer, brighter and more lifelike. The HDR content will presumably stream to Amazon’s app on smart TVs supporting the same HDR format.
