Welcome to the 71st issue of the web publication for audio, music and home theater - transitioned from the former national radio program AUDIOPHILE AUDITION, which was heard for over 13 years on public radio and commercial classical stations coast to coast. We are dedicated to your auditional wellbeing.
This month we have 45 SACD & DVD-A reviews for you, continuing our record of publishing more hi-res disc reviews than any other publication. With the rest of our CD reviews we total 132 discs, including those added during the month. One of the new Mercury 3-channel SACDs - Byron Janis in two of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos - is our Disc of the Month, and you will find five reviews of the first new Mercuries as well as two more of the RCA Living Stereo SACDs. Our three component reviews are the VR-2 tower speakers from Von Schweikert, McCormack's UDP-1 universal disc player, and DVDO's HD Video Scaler.
Don't miss the three different Special Features this issue: Our coverage of several Christmas discs - both CD and SACD; some interesting comments on playback of the 3-channel SACDs from speaker designer Siegfried Linkwitz; and classical music video producer Christopher Nupen talking about the many unique advantages of DVD for the presentation of intimate documentaries on leading performers and conductors. Speaking of music videos, the 24 DVDs reviewed this month includes documentaries on George Szell and Erich Korngold and concerts by Wilhelm Kempff, Jussi Bjoerling, Jazz Vocalists from Concord Records, and leading performers from TDK videos plus Joe Cocker and Devo.
Be sure to register for this month's giveaway of a dozen Fantasy new SACD releases by Benny Carter, Gerry Mulligan and Milt Jackson. And check this page for a special editorial later this month.
