It is a superb essay titled Forward in Faith, in which among many other things John makes the point that bumper strips have devalued our language: "Proud To Be An American" fits; "My Self-Respect Derives In Part From My Active Support Of The Ideals Of The Declaration Of Independence" doesn't.
